Writers Nook is built local-first, which means the simplest way we protect your writing is by not having it in the first place. Your words never live on our servers — not even if you subscribe to Device Sync. This policy explains what little we do collect, and why.
Your manuscripts, notes, story bible, and settings live as files on your own computer. We cannot read them. Nothing you write touches our servers unless you turn on the optional AI Writing Assistant (see below) — and even then the text you choose to share is processed in transit, never stored.
Device Sync (coming later — Phase 2) passes your changes between your devices through our relay, end-to-end encrypted. The relay forwards changes and does not store your writing. We cannot read it, and no copy of your manuscript exists on our servers at any point — with or without a subscription.
The AI Writing Assistant is optional and off until you turn it on. It sends nothing anywhere unless you explicitly enable it and accept its consent screen.
When you use it, the text you choose to share for that request — typically the scene you're working on, plus any Story Bible entries and the manuscript "About" note you've linked — is sent to the AI provider behind the model you've selected, to generate that one response. With the built-in subscription, that provider is Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (ChatGPT), depending on the model you choose. You can always see exactly what is being shared before you send it.
You can also bring your own API key (an option in Settings). When you do, your requests go directly from your device to that provider, under your own account and their terms — they never pass through, and are never seen by, our servers. You can also point the assistant at a local or self-hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoint (such as Ollama running on your own machine). In that case, requests go from your device to that endpoint and never reach any external server; if the model runs fully locally, your text never leaves your machine at all.
In every case, the text you share is used only to produce your result. On our side it is processed in transit, not stored, and not logged; the AI providers use it solely to generate your response and do not train their models on it. The only things we keep are your license key and your credit balance, so we can run the metered subscription and stop it before it surprises you. The assistant is a relay, not a vault: we never store your writing.
If you'd rather not use it, leave it off — the rest of Writers Nook works exactly the same, at no cost. To remove your AI subscription data, use the deletion path below.
